About Toto
Toto was founded in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians working with Boz Scaggs) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. Taking their name from the Latin word meaning "all inclusive," the group was intent on exploring every musical style.
Toto's third release, Turn Back, was not a success in 1981. However they came back with their fourth release, Isolation, which contained two hit songs with the title track and Roseanna. The album and their tour made them a household brand across the globe.
After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It's a change from the ballads of previous albums and includes some heavy rock. It was their first platinum album in North America.
During the recording process for the fifth album The group loses its manager and faces financial difficulties. They decide to record a brand new album and change their name to an entirely different producer. Joseph Williams, the son of John Williams, the legendary film composer and actress Barbara Ruick from 1950s, is now replacing Fergie Frederiksen as lead singer. Joseph Williams is a natural frontman, and gives the band a much-needed boost.
The band releases Mindfields in 1999, and then embarks on a massive worldwide tour. After a few weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and begins recording their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes an original cover of Weezer's song Hash Pipe in response to the band's cover of their hit Africa on the recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
